So, we finally got to have a better look at the mental mode this episode. I was kind of curious as to why weapon had to be represented by little girls to begin with but this episode explained a lot into the major characteristics of those weapon of the fog.
It seems that the Fog is an entity that is ever improving and trying to become the best weapon possible. It is still completely unknown as to who control the fog and for what purpose, but at the very least now we know more about the weapon themselves. It seems that what used to be only ships now have incorporated real persona to their ship to improve their ability in battle. With the mental mode the ships are not only solid weapon but they are able to think and react to environmental factor with simulated emotions, which in term supposedly improve their capacity in battle. I also assume that their wide range of personality (elitist, energetic, cocky, curious) is present as a way to push progress even further, as better suited personality will definitively have more success on the battle field and therefore newer model can follow that personality path. Of course their personality could also be so different only for the anime purpose and nothing else, but hey, I like to find logical in-world reason for stupid stuff like that.
The more the show goes on the more impressed I am with the technical term related to marine combat and how amazing it is for people interested in that field. The research on this side of the show is quite interesting and commendable, but unfortunately for me, it is overshadowed by a lot of problems. For once the animation of the anime is rather terrible. Might it be the mechanical movement of the characters or the badly made explosions and other effect. It is especially important to have impressive effect when 90% of your show is all about explosion and other weapon effect. The lightning and especially the graviton field in the episode looked really bad. I could hardly tell what was going on and overall it made the show look like something that dates back to the 90s. It is rather sad that the show has art that looks 2 decades old because the action in Arpeggio of Blue Steel is really good, but an action show needs proper representation of their action moment otherwise it all goes to waste.
Overall this episode was good, but I really hope the show will pull something new soon because I feel that the novelty is already wearing off. If there is no real progress in the story and the universe in the next 6 episodes I feel like the show will just go in circle with no real direction and that nothing will feel accomplished at the end. Hopefully next episode gives us something new an interesting.
