The show is taking a direction completely different to what it took in the past with this episode and I can’t say that I am pleased with this sudden shift. I already found that the show was maybe too humane by time to have it reach full potential and now this episode was just completely out of the military genre and was instead more of a discussion about human selfishness.
The episode felt like a slice of life dramatic seinen more than a marine military anime. It was difficult to judge if we were dealing with real awkward human being or with machines. It just seems like the mental model of the fog are really difficult to understand and to follow by time. I have a hard time staying immersed in the universe when one moment they act as human and the next like a robot. How can a mental model be embarrassed by wearing different clothes when it was just fine walking around in panties and bra? Furthermore, it pisses me off to see those two mental model freeze for a good minute when they discuss about 2 sentences to each other. They are machine, why bother transmitting audio data to each other if you can just straight up communicate with one another with the basic message to begin with. Sorry to tell you that a machine who can control a whole ship, who can fake emotion and who has artificial intelligent, but somehow takes a minute to communicate information to a similar machine, is a complete failure.
Another thing that bugged me was the way their core vibrated when they laugh or expressed other expression, this doesn’t seem like the kind of functionality I would expect from a machine’s core. There are just so many inconsistencies with what those mental model are supposed to be and represent and the way they act that the more episode we see them in, the more difficult I find it for me to follow this show. Iona and her crew are still looking just fine to me in the way a crew as theirs should behave (although they are a very immature and easy-going crew), but the fog ship are acting weirder and weirder as the story progresses and it makes me feel uncertain about the future of the show. To me it is starting to feel like the show is getting derailed into content I never wanted to explore in the first place. I came here for the submarine and explosion and now instead I have little girl robot playing dress up and tea together.
Hopefully the show will change direction soon enough and return to a more serious and military approach, because I have a feeling that if it keeps on that path it will just fails hardcore and never amount to anything worthwhile. I’ll be keeping a close and judgmental eye on Arpeggio of Blue Steel for a while and hopefully it rectifies its direction before I have to drop the show for being too boring.
