I always heard a lot from this manga, I know a lot of people were eager to see this coming into the television screen. I, for one, am just glad I’ll finally be able to experience Assassination Classroom since I’m too lazy and snob to read manga.
After watching this first episode I can perfectly understand why Assassination Classroom has such good rep too. I was expecting maybe it would be the grim messages or the comedy that would make the show, but from what I saw from the first episode, like any other great shows, it was not the story or the universe that gave life here, it was the characters. Yet speaking of characters I have a bone to pick regarding our main protagonist.
damn the person who designed the character of Nagisa. I watched this episode through hearing everyone referring to him as a guy and I still expected it to simply be a translation mistake. I had to go look at the manga myself and translate myself to make sure that character was indeed meant to be a guy. I don’t care how you look at it, there is no one who would dress like that and have such an haircut that would consider himself to be a guy. When I came to accept everyone was calling him a guy, I began assuming he was simply a transgender guy who simply felt more like a girl inside and had yet to go through with any biological transformation to feel better about his body. Problem with that theory, there is no sign of Nagisa having any gender or identity issues. If anything Nagisa describes himself to be invisible, yet usually people with gender identity feel more discriminated and too visible. This simply makes me believe that who ever designed that character is an alien that has no idea what a guy or a girl should look like. Even the damn voice actor is a girl!
Character gender identity aside, I think this is, at least so far, a great anime that as a lot more going on than action or comedy. I thought the whole point of the show would simply be about the action and comedy, but as it turns out there seems to be a lot of character involvement and development in there. As weird as it might sound, this reminds me a lot of an old anime known as Great Teacher Onizuka, a story where a really weird teacher takes on a class of loser and fix their issues and help them come to term with who they all are.
I’m still unsure if I’ll find enough content each episode to talk about this show, but I still want and do my best to cover it this season, I feel it will be an awesome anime and I want to do my best to make it justice.
