I am definitively not the greatest romcom expert, it is not a genre that I usually cover, but I really enjoyed this first episode of Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. The concept was really interesting, having a girl fall in love with a shoujo manga artist and helping him figure out what to write in his love story without him realizing that she is in love with him. The jokes were fun, the main girl was clumsy and really shy, but she was not obnoxious. It might not sound like such a big deal, but around 70% of teenage girl main character just annoy the hell out of me, cuteness alone is not enough to make someone interesting.
In just a single episode we got to see the kind of comedy that will be used in the show, it is a cute kind of humour, the jokes are simple and innocent and it help gives a great atmosphere to the anime. What more the love story here is really cute and simple, it doesn’t feel like anything out of this world for a romantic comedy but there is enough original element in the show that it doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to the canvas of a romcom. Another major element of Gekkou Shoujo Nozaki-kun is its soundtrack. I am not that great at noticing those usually, but this anime had really great music, both in the opening but even more so as insert songs. I think one of the greatest point of Gekkou Shoujo Nozaki-kun was definitively the atmosphere created by the art and music, it is what made the show more than its characters or its story.
Now it is not all positive here unfortunately. While I really loved the current relationship and romance, It seems rather evident by the conclusion of this first episode and by the opening theme that the show will turn into a reverse harem. Lately the genre has been rather stiff and repetitive and it gives me a bad feeling about the future of the show. I might continue watching it to see how it turns out, but I won’t be blogging the show. I would still recommend for romcom enthusiast to watch this first episode as it was definitively a 25 minutes of my life I do not regret investing in this anime.
