Gokukoku no Brynhildr is not what I would consider to be a stellar anime, but it was fine…I guess. Gokukoku no Bryhildr makes me think of Another with less creepy and more ridiculous. The show also gives me a lot of Final Destination vibes, like those shows were not overdone enough already. I don’t think this is going to be a bad show, but this first episode definitively haven’t convinced me of much greatness in the future either. I’m sure the show will have its highlight, I don’t think this show will fail its purpose, but I doubt it will be much more than average.
I think that average is about as good as I can describe the show for now, I feel like things are a bit too weird and outlandish for now to take the show seriously. Usually in a show about death and killing the objective is for people to feel scared. You want to get attached to the characters and want them to survive, or you want to picture scenarios that could happen in every day life. While every death-scenario this episode were indeed relatable, it is a bit difficult to get involved in a story involving sci-fi witch and alien discovery. I just feel like this show could turn very wrong very quickly if it goes too far into the weird characters scenario.
As long as the characters stay mostly human and that super power characters don’t start popping up more, I think this show has good chances to be enjoyable. If the other girl we see in the opening all join with new super power and special characteristic I feel like the core of the show will be drained dry and replace with the silliness of fantasy rather than the cruelty of death. I was also a bit annoyed that the show seemed to give way too many clues about what was going to happen next. In particular the clues about the moles of Kuroneko were just way over the top for me, I felt I was watching a mystery show for special need child. The fun of mystery is to figure out the mystery, not to have huge flashing arrow pointing to them. I hope this was a one time event and the show won’t destroy itself any more that way in the future.
I will keep an eye on Gokukoku no Brynhildr, the show does have some potential if it picks itself up a bit more, but I still have my doubts and I won’t give the show many second chances. Hopefully next episode manages to bring my opinion of the show back around.
