“Oh Great… Another anime about music clubs”
…is what I thought I would write about, but then I actually watched the episode and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Yes, it’s a show about music. Yes, it’s about high school girls. And, yes, there will be generic friendship scenes embedded into it all. But the show is so well done that I just can’t complain about anything. Hibike! Euphonium should prove to be a great slice of life, and I expect tears to come out of my poor little eyes often enough while it airs to think that this is worthy of my attention.
A lot of things encourage me to think that this is not just another generic music show: the animation is already a good signal (at least it tells me that the company hoped to get some money out of this), but what really got me into it was the main character’s already wavering thoughts and her past in the music world. Whereas other shows might have focused more on the events at hand, such as the new band sucking (a lot), this episode instead put most of our eyes on the main character, suggesting a focus on character development rather than just on the band. Which means… Tears. Emotions. More tears. And cheesy girl friendships. So if you don’t like any of those things, then this show probably isn’t for you. Otherwise, lovers of any P.A. Works slice of life or the character development in Chihayafuru should be intrigued by this show.
I’ll definitely be looking forward to watching this every week, and I hope I can drag many of you along with me into this ride. Hibike! Euphonium is going to be fun! Probably not the best show of the season (Slice of Life shows are difficult to get up there, after all), but definitely among the shows I’m looking forward to the most for the Spring season.
Final Verdict: This is good. This is great. I love it. Yay! 🙂
the cute ones always play the biggest instrument… hmmm…
