This show just keeps on surprising me, I knew it would be difficult at time and try to make me shed a tear or two, but I never expected that it would nearly succeed in doing so only 3 episodes into the season. This episode was simply so beautiful and so unexpected, it was everything I would have loved this show to be, everything during the show seems so slow-paced and calm and yet, I feel like the show moves forward so fast that everything we kind of get a grip on vanish before we can reach for it.
This episode we learned that Ai indeed had a father and that it was Hambart Hampnie, Hambart learned that the girl he was looking for died and that she left a daughter in her place, Yuki is now already working with Ai and Scar as reappeared too. We learned about Hampnie’s deepest wish and it was granted the very same episode, so many things happened ! Ai also discovered why everyone in her village was killed, phew I think my mind was overloading with emotions and information.
I had already assumed that Hampnie would be the main male character for the show, I never though for a minute that the man who was Ai’s father and also invincible would be dead only a few episodes later. It seems that he was simply never able to die because his wish couldn’t be granted, yet as soon as he realized that he could die with regret and friends and family crying next to him, his wish was granted and he was finally able to die and rest and peace. It is simply so cruel for Ai, she had to bury her adoptive family, her entire village, her mother and now her father. That poor young little girl didn’t even had the time to get started in life and to understand what she is that already she had to overcome more hardship than anyone else would have in their entire life.
I think the saddest thing about it all is that now she doesn’t have anyone else she can really call a family. Of course she is surrounded by Scar and Yuki for now, but remember that Yuki might die at any moment, especially considering it is his wish, and Scar isn’t a human and can’t really help Ai in any way. I really fear for the future of Ai as a human being because of how things are playing out for her at the moment, she might very well develop some serious psychological issues if things keep up like that, it would be a shame if the last little girl on earth was to become a monster. Then again she already is quite the monster considering she is half-human half-gravekeeper, but that’s detail.
Overall I’m quite happy with the way the show is going, it has such a bright and happy look and yet still manages to feel completely dark and evil, the contrast is interesting and I would love to see what else the show can come up with now that nearly every single character we ever got attached to died.
