Kantai Collection: KanColle episode 1 [First Impression]: The Poison Killing Anime

I knew very little about Kantai Collection going in. I know it is a browser card game of some sort and I know there is a lot of hentai of Kantai Collection popping up, mostly Yuri and NTR stuff. I am aware there is a lot of hype for this anime, but I really don’t know what to expect from it. Here is my first impression.

Alright so, this reminds me a lot of Arpeggio of Blue Steel – Ars Nova in term of concept, a concept I must admit I disliked a lot, so it certainly isn’t such a great start for winning me over. I’m not sure why Japan has such a huge hard-on for girls representing battleships and anything of the like, but to me this is simply a new generation of magical girl being born. Seeing as the genre of Mahou Shoujo is one I find extremely difficult to get into as a male who doesn’t understand Japanese cuteness.

Kantai Collection little school girls

The more of the episode I watched, the more I realized how much I disliked absolutely everything about the concept of this show. A navy school? Moe schoolgirl with super power and absolutely annoying voices? A calm and meaningless show filled with empty smiles and overly energetic dream girls? This is the plague that is killing anime. This anime is exactly what I would never want my parents to see.

There are still a lot of prejudice against anime, and they are well justified when I realize that people are hyped about such ridiculous show as this one. This is simply a sad excuse for the last of the moe supporters to cling to as they realize their Moe-genre is slowly dying (FOR VERY GOOD REASONS). After seeing who the characters are and what style the show is going after, it is very difficult for me to remain cool-headed and unbiased when I witness the poison that is killing anime standing there, right in front of my eyes.

Kantai Collection awfully stupid design

From a production point of view, you can see that this show is definitively of higher production value than the usual stuff that airs in the winter season. It was fluid, the characters were all beautiful and the atmosphere was complete with good sound effect and an appropriate soundtrack. The voice acting was done very well (despite my dislike for the type of voice actor selected). From a pure production point of view, Kantai Collection is probably going to be the best production for this Winter. Too bad so much money and great talent had to be wasted on something like this.

If there is one thing I can be thankful for this show is the absolutely ridiculous character design. I just can’t wait to see someone cosplay one of these at a convention. The characters in Kantai Collection already look like little girl with bad cosplay, I can’t wait to see how much worse these cosplay will turn out in real life. In term of Universe and Character design, this show is a sad excuse of an anime, I’ve seen 8 years old child come up with better design and story than those. If you are one of those that was hype for this show and it was not simply because you are a huge moe-fan, I really want to hear your reasoning for the hype on this one, because I don’t get it one bit.
