This episode was interesting and everything, and I don’t want to take anything away from how cool it was, but I must admit I would have loved to have an even more in-depth lecture from the guy Ryouko was listening to in class. I love sociology and the teacher seemed to really know his stuff, it was probably even more interesting since we saw the lectures from Ryouko’s eyes, it helped even further from dissociating ourselves from humanity and looking at our species from an outsider point of view. It was an interesting thought experiment on altruism and selfishness.
Having talked about this, I can understand more people would be interested in the actual story instead of tangent inside of it, so let us get to it. Tamiya Ryouka is having an increasingly important role in this story. If there is one thing that caught my attention this episode, it is how she is becoming an ever greater nemesis to Shinichi, but in really weird ways. Tamiya is a cold and intelligent little alien and she is very interested in learning how to survive as a species, how she could procreate and learn how to survive as more than an individual. Through her research, through her experimentation, she is becoming ever more human each time we see her. She is now taking care of a baby human, poorly, but at least she hasn’t killed it yet. She is even blending in with human society and attending lectures and other human events to learn more about us and herself. We even saw her legitimately laughing this episode! There is no doubt that she is acting ever more human, while on the opposite side of the spectrum, you have Shinichi. The guy is losing his humanity ever more each episode. This time he doesn’t seem to trust anyone anymore except for the only other person in the same position he is in. He even runs around campus telling every “human” to get out of his way. Shinichi has given up on his humanity, he has given up on contact with everyone else he once cared about. He lost Murano, but really he sees it as a way to protect her more than anything else, at the end of the day, he now took an alien path by decision. Shinichi has exiled himself from his own humanity and now the remnant of his heart are torturing him for it.
As a final note, I want to say that I certainly do not trust the investigator to leave them alone for that long. The guy is a huge liability, I know they don’t want to kill any human, but that guy won’t shut up and you can see it in his eyes. They will have to go after him at some point, otherwise they will be the one to be getting into a lab and dissected. I am willing to bet we are going to see this guy again, and I doubt he will be a friend.
