This episode of Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu was focused mainly on the value of life and why you should, or shouldn’t protect it. A lot of good point were raised, Migi, who finally has a name, has no notion of moral or social values. As a parasite, Migi has no sense of community, it might have to reproduce at some point, but other than that he has no need for other member of his own species. Humans are communal creatures, we need a society and others in our life. Someone who lives alone all his life would be unhappy and broken, social interaction, family and friends are all things humans need and strive for in their life. This is where we get our feelings of compassion, this is how we become concerned about the good of our species.
Normally speaking for a parasite, more parasite would just go for the same food source and reduce your ability to survive instead of increasing it. This is probably why, from the point of you Migi, it is impossible for him to understand the value in anything else than himself. There is something interesting here taking place though. Migi and his species are different than other parasite has they feed through cannibalism of organism similar to their host. Because of this, they act a lot more like a predator than a parasite in their feeding habit. From this analysis it would make sense for them to start grouping up in order to facilitate access to food and to defend one another. I feel like other parasite who succeeded in controlling the brain of their host will quickly converge together and will form some kind of “society”. This means that Migi will be left as an outcast as he is essentially a fuck up. From there it wouldn’t be surprising if Izumi and Migi continue to live symbiotically as it is both their best option towards survival.
Having said this, it is also very likely that Migi will just want to betray Izumi at some point for a better future. I somehow doubt that Migi can “learn” compassion, if a better opportunity presents itself, Izumi’s going to lose his head. It must be really freaky to have a hand which could murder you at any minute, but I’d still be much more freaked out but that same hand trying to jerk me off in a public bathroom. In a scale from 1 to absolute embarrassment, I think being caught jerking off at an urinal while I keep screaming to my hand “stop this, please stop” is pretty near absolute embarrassment.
I am really loving this anime so far. It came as a surprise to me and each episode I keep getting even more hyped since it delivers on every level. Kiseijuu is intelligent and bring up very interesting moral and philosophical questions. What is our purpose, as human. Why should we care about other animals? Why do we dislike cruelty so much? Of course must of those answers are pretty obvious once you take sociology into account, but they remain interesting to discuss with an alien life form. Trying to communicate those feelings to an amoral creature must be such a fun challenge. I want my own pet alien one day so I can teach it the value of life !
