Kyoukai no Rinne is the story of a girl who can see spirits and where one day she sees a shinigami whom she started following around in his adventure. I could go into greater detail, but , unfortunately, Kyoukai no Rinne is best described as a shittier version of Noragami. Both shows have the same kind of universe, one where spirits are stuck into the world in-between and they need to repent and let go of their earthly regrets to move on. In both shows those spirits turns problematic and evil if they do not. In both show we have two main characters, one human girl who can see spirits and one male shinigami/deity who takes care of those spirits. The relationship between the two is the same, and the main characters personalities are very similar too. If there is one thing where the two anime differ, it is in the type of comedy they are going for and with the seriousness of the show. Kyoukai no Rinne seems to be something really light and a pure comedy, there isn’t the kind of drama and sadness that was rampant in Noragami, this show is just a fun little way to kill time.
Kyoukai no Rinne is not as funny as Noragami, not as well done, not as pretty and overall just not as interesting. It even comes about a year since Noragami first aired and therefore it is not been long enough to try and reinvent the genre, especially since there was so little that felt reinvented in this episode. Yes it was funny at time, I did laugh at some jokes in there, but the show just doesn’t have the grasp it needs to justify being so close to the good anime that was Noragami.
My verdict? If you saw Noragami, don’t watch this as it is not as good, if you didn’t see Noragami, go watch it and then don’t watch this show because it is not as good. I won’t be watching it either, doesn’t look like a bad show, it simply looks like a worse show than an alternative which already exists.
