Top 5 Winter 2014 Anime Opening Theme

0-gate top 5 OP

We are around the middle of the season and it is the perfect time to look back at the opening of every show that airs in this season and decide which one have the best opening theme out there ! Join us in this top 5 where we will show you what this Winter 2014 season had best to offer in term of anime opening. To be frank, most of the opening this season were rather boring and unimaginative, but we still got to find some pretty interesting one from the lot of them to make this top 5.

Number 5. Witch Craft Works – divine intervention by fhana

Our first winner in this top 5 comes from Witch Craft Works, a rather popular show of this Winter season, but when it came down to the opening, there was not that much to say about it. The opening of Witch Craft Works is what I consider to be a perfect example of what a normal anime opening is like when it is well done. You have a good character introduction, you get to see some action scenes highlighting the different faction of the show, the song is dynamic and follow the proper normal rhythm for an anime opening which is : it has a strong first 10 seconds, slows down for the next 50 second and then kicks in for the finale at 1 minute till the end.

This is a very normal opening, it is well executed, enjoyable, it is all it is supposed to be. The fact that it was so well made allowed it to make it to the bottom rank of this Top 5, but if you disregard the bunnies (which are hilarious), this opening as no real flavor. It doesn’t have anything that makes it distinguishable from the thousands of anime opening out there. This is why Witch Craft Works find itself comfortably in 5th place of this season best anime opening.

Number 4. Space Dandy – Viva Namida by Yasuyuki Okamura

Already at the 4th place of this Top 5 and we get to see something a bit different than what we usually see in term of opening. Space Dandy’s opening is particularly interesting for the amount of effect put into the opening. You can constantly see stars, boobs and other cosmetic effect floating around. The art style itself is rather unique and bring something rather fresh and unique to the visuals. While the animation and “scenario” of the opening is rather conventional by itself, it is the art in the background and special addition of starts and planet floating around that really brings this opening up the chart into this top 5.

The music is also rather unique and representative of the overall attitude of the show. It is not a master piece of course, but its flavour allows to reinforce the feeling of the visuals and produce an overall great result which really represent properly the unique vision that Space Dandy brings in general. For those reasons, the opening ranks in the 4th place of our Top 5.

Number 3. Kill la Kill – ambiguous by GRANiDELiA

Kill la Kill might very well be the best show of the season, but it’s opening only gets the 3rd position here. The opening itself has very limited animation until the final 30 seconds. For the longest time it only shows still shots of character changing clothing. Because of how limited the animation is, it really prevents Kill la Kill from reaching a higher position in this Top 5, I suppose poor animation will remain the biggest criticism of the show even when it comes to its opening.

Animation aside, this opening feelings and its presentation is absolutely fantastic. The song is powerful and conveys a message that works well with what is visually presented and the unique art style of Kill la Kill is properly approached and used in this opening to make something beautiful that harmonize well together. The level of originality and the quality of the opening is what made it reach so high in our list despite having a rather still-looking opening. Seeing all the character and their different outfit really conveyed the message of the show well, but more importantly, it showed the great character design and how important it is to make cool looking, bad ass characters.

Number 2. Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren – Voice by ZAQ

If Kill la Kill was kept from reaching higher on this Top 5 because of its animation, it is the complete opposite when it comes down to Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren. The opening is completely animated from start to finish, might it be simple animation taken directly from the anime, small character turning in circle or feathers falling from the sky, it seems that every second of the opening was moving and active and jumping around. This opening screams of quality and attention to detail. I have not watched Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren (even though the show sounds and look awesome) and even without knowing the characters I am still completely in love with them just by looking at this opening. The introduction of the characters in this opening is absolutely incredible, an opening is just that, an introduction to the show, and this opening is just fantastic in its presentation. The character feel alive and real and the smoothness of the hair in the wind to the little head tilting they do when they are introduce is just right and enough to make it look even more accessible and enjoyable to watch.

The song that goes along with the opening is great and works really well with the animation, the effects added to the animation just embellish everything and make you feel as if you were dreaming. Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren really has what one could call a perfect opening. If Witch Craft Works did things well while nothing being fantastic, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren did fantastic with everything it had to work with. This is why it finds itself at the second place of our Winter 2014 Anime Opening Theme Top 5.

Number 1. Z/X Ignition – EX: FUTURIZE by Youko Hikasa

And we finally arrive at our first position for the very best Anime Opening of this season… Z/X Ignition ! I don’t recommend this show to anyone, but I’d definitively recommend this opening to everyone. Z/X Ignition isn’t ages above Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren in term of quality of its opening, but it still manages to beat it ever so slightly into  the first position by the power of its transition and background effects. The opening isn’t as pretty as our second position, the song is arguably much more generic and weaker than our previous concurrent too, but it simply blows any competition away with the way it proceeds to sweet camera transition between scenes and characters, following artistic effect that progresses through the opening as we do. The transition between each character is in fact so smooth and well done that I could mute this video and watch it in loop as a gif for hour before I could start getting bored of it.

Everything else in that opening remains solid and helped it reached this top spot, and while the competition was rather weak for the season, we still managed to get some rather solid opening to make it to this Top 5. I hope you enjoyed all of them and you can stay in touch with us for the Top 5 Ending Theme that will follow in a month or so.
