Recommendations: Upcoming Summer Anime 2014

It is just about this time of the Season! All ongoing anime are about to end, and another season is about to start. Thus, I have compiled here a few anime which should prove to be interesting; whether they are bad or good, they definitely have the potential to become big, and a lot of people are looking forward to them. As a special edition of the Recommendations column, here are 5 Summer Anime to look forward to in 2014, and why they deserve the hype that they have at the moment.

P.S.: No second seasons were included. Since people usually know already if they liked the first season enough to watch the second one, there isn’t really any point in “recommending” any of them…

63037lLove Stage!!

Producer: J.C. Staff
Genre: Shounen Ai
Preview: PV 1
Summary: With a father who’s a singer, a mother who’s a movie star, and an older brother Shougo who’s the lead vocalist for the super-popular band “The Crusherz,” Sena Izumi, an otaku college student, is the only dull one born into this super famous and talented family. He loves “Magical Girl LalaLulu” and is working hard to become a mangaka, but one day he winds up appearing in a TV commercial he just can’t turn down. There, he’s reunited with Ichijou Ryouma, the super-popular young actor he costarred with on a project ten years prior.

What is this?! A Shounen Ai series? Those still exist?! That’s right, they do. It certainly has been a while since a BL series came out (the last one being Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi a while back), and I’m sure many, many girls are looking forward to it. With a manga already possessing a huge fanbase and just the right timing for it to come out, J.C. Staff has landed the jackpot on this one. Now all they need to do is not screw it up as they did for many other shows we know, and it should get pretty crazy simply from the scarcity of shows in the genre. Fans of Yaoi, rejoice, and sincerely hope that J.C. Staff pulls a Bakuman and not a Yumekui Merry in their production team.

Producer: P.A. Works
Genre: Slice of Life
Preview: PV 1, PV 2
Summary: “On the other side of the glass, you can see tomorrow.”

The heroine is Touko Fukami, a 17-year-old born in Fukui Prefecture. Her dream is to become a glass artisan.

Here, the summary says nothing. Absolutely nothing. And yet, this is high up in my want-to-watch list, and has had some pretty good hype on it for people who are knowledgeable with the P.A. Works studio. After Nagi no Asukara which came out last fall, the fairly new studio that brought you Angel Beats! and Hanasaku Iroha is back with yet another slice of life which seems like it’ll be just as beautiful as all its other shows. The studio is famous for chunking out some pretty awesome Slice of Life romances, and with this new one coming out my expectations are high in terms of what could be done with it. Whether they will be met just like with Nagi no Asukara, or they will crumble just as Red Data Girl made them crumble, I have no idea, but sign me up for watching this for at least 3 episodes while I fangirl over the prettiness of this.

59947lAo Haru Ride

Producer: Production I.G.
Genre: Romance, Slice of Life, Drama, Comedy, Shoujo
Preview: PV 1, PV 2
Summary: Yoshioka Futaba has a few reasons why she wants to “reset” her image & life as a new high school student. Because she’s cute, she was ostracized by her female friends in junior high, and because of a misunderstanding, she couldn’t get her feeling across to the one boy she has ever liked, Tanaka-kun.

Now in high school, she is determined to be as unladylike as possible so that her friends won’t be jealous of her. While living her life this way contentedly, she meets Tanaka-kun again, but he now goes under the name of Mabuchi Kou. He tells her that he felt the same way as she did when they were younger, but now things can never be the same again. Will Futaba be able to continue her love that never even started from three years ago?

Romance fans, rejoice! A good RomCom has arrived. I have been reading this manga for quite a while now; it may not be the best Romance manga out there, but it is certainly well done and greatly deserves the Live-Action Drama it got recently as well as this upcoming TV anime. The hype surrounding this show is already pretty big and the first episode hasn’t even come out yet; fans of Shoujo will be quite happy to watch this carefree Summer show, and even happier when they realize that the manga is still ongoing and spits out chapters pretty often. Although not on my watch list due to already having read what is going to happen, I greatly recommend this to anyone who just can’t get enough of RomComs.

63277lTokyo Ghoul

Producer: Studio Pierrot
Genre: Action, Mystery, Drama, Horror, Supernatural, Psychological
Preview: PV 1, PV 2
Summary: The suspense horror/dark fantasy story is set in Tokyo, which is haunted by mysterious “ghouls” who are devouring humans. People are gripped by the fear of these ghouls whose identities are masked in mystery. An ordinary college student named Kaneki encounters Rize, a girl who is an avid reader like him, at the café he frequents. Little does he realize that his fate will change overnight.

It is a huge, huge shame that Studio Pierrot happened to acquire this anime over all other animation studios… And yet, Tokyo Ghoul should still remain a hit this summer. Asolid horror story, the first few chapters of the manga told me enough about this series for me to expect many good things out of it, and even more as an anime. Animation and OST could be absolutely crucial to making this anime series an instantaneous hit or a critical disappointment. We can only hope that Studio Pierrot will stop being so lazy and finally bring us a great production with Tokyo Ghoul, because this could easily become the hit of the season.

60263lAldnoah. Zero

Producer: A-1 Pictures, TROYCA
Genre: Action, Mecha, Sci-Fi
Preview: PV 1
Summary: The tag line reads “Let justice be done. Though the heavens fall.”

We’re finally reaching the end, and I left this one for last for damn good reasons. Gen Urubouchi, the man who gave us Madoka, Psycho-Pass and Fate/Zero, is on the run again, this time with a mecha series which seems truly promising. Although the plot remains unknown at the moment, the preview gives us drama, action and explosions and is also accompanied by 4 other sneak peeks in which we hear that the theme song of the show is sung by Kalafina. Whether it is good or not, the production of Aldnoah. Zero is huge, and the famous cast specifically chosen for this series leads me to think that this could be the hit of the season. I have my hopes up for this, and it is with pleasure that I give it a spot in my Recommendations list for this Summer.
