With only 3 episodes left, I feel like we should be getting closer to a conclusion for the show, yet this episode went in quite the opposite direction. Watching this episode of Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin I felt like I was at the start of a season, not nearing the end of one. This episode could have easily been the first episode or second episode of a new show and it would have made a lot of sense. There were new characters introduced, a lot of character we barely knew and suddenly they had their moment of spotlight and we got to learn just enough about them to be interested in their relationship and what is going on between them. Overall I feel like I just watched a whole new show and a completely different plot spawn in front of me. We saw once again a lot of the same characters we were introduced to previously, but the whole show seems to be going into a completely different direction. The more Ryuugajou Nanana goes on, the more I feel like the show is just one big introduction to everyone and everything in the universe. I feel like every episode we get introduced to something a bit different and there is so much depth and complex relationship between every characters and organization and yet we don’t seem to move forward an inch inside the story itself.
Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin is a beautiful, fun show with a lot of material, interesting characters, a compelling universe…but somehow I feel like we won’t get anything more than an introduction to all this awesomeness without any finality. The show goes anywhere and everywhere in a very horizontal fashion, where we get to see a bit of every element possible, but none of them seem to develop further. We get scattered bit and pieces of everything and go nowhere with any of it, it is getting rather frustrating. What is the most frustrating of it all is the way everything we are shown looks so interesting and awesome and it seems we only get to see the tip of the iceberg and be teased here. I have a very strong feeling that this show might never deliver on any of the things it has set-up so far.
From the way and pace of the current story, It is evident that we will either have an ending that doesn’t close many plot points OR we won’t get any kind of solid conclusion at all. At this point even a rushed ending isn’t an option because between the death of Nanana, the old Adventure Club members, the secret organization of Juugo’s father and the many other characters, we have just too many characters and plot to explore in 3 episodes. Hell, I’ll be impress if they manage to close just a single of those plot points before the end of the season. I’m not sure if it was the plan all along to have this show be so empty and hoping for a new season, or if the show was just made to have people read the manga without any emphasis what so ever for it to have value as a stand alone piece. Either way, as much as I love the show, I think it is heading in a very bad direction.
