After blogging every single first episode of anime at the beginning of this season, I must admit I am getting a bit impatient when it comes to unpromising shows. I had really low expectations for Sidonia no Kishi and was watching the show only with half my attention and waiting for sign of how bad it would turn out, just so I could stop paying attention and start talking about how bad it is. At first I was really bothered by the lack of facial expression on the characters because of the 3DCG…but then I was unable to find any new reason to dislike the show from then on, because Sidonia no Kishi turns out to be absolutely awesome.
I was really surprised and blown away when I realize how interesting this show is, especially since there was really nothing like this made in a long time. We’ve had a lot of science-fiction show in the past few years, but none that really had this atmosphere to it. I feel like I am watching what Suisei no Gargantia should have been, some kind of mix between Ergo Proxy and Battlestar Galactica. Sideonia no Kishi looks like a great anime that will really bring forward interesting struggles that are more than just mecha or science-fiction or action, we will get the emotional and mental struggle too ! A big fight with alien and robot is cool, but what is much cooler is the mental challenge the person inside the robot has to face, not the battle itself.
I love the universe the show is set in, this post-apocalyptic world where the last of humanity lives in a space ship and humanity tries to survive best it can. We have immortal human ruling a city and making what looks like clones-girls to build an army to fight the alien attacking them. There seem to be a lot of layer to the universe and this is something I was waiting for, a show that was not all just shallow, but one that actually had content and a universe that you could imagine yourself living in.
I am going to be watching this show this season and I’m also going to be blogging it. I recommend it to all science-fiction and Seinen fan, although I must warn that it uses 3DCG, therefore the art style might be a turn off for a lot of people, but the story and universe seem to be well worth the sacrifice.
