Suisei no Gargantia Overall Review

Suisei no Gargantia squid army

Suisei no Gargantia is finally over and I just cannot thank anyone that there wasn’t a second season or more episodes. The show took his time but managed to be a big pile of crap despite how much money was thrown at it. I digress, read more to learn where and why Suisei no Gargantia should be avoided at all cost.

Art and Animations

Suisei no Gargantia I'm a butterfly

I might have just said that the show was complete shit, but that’s only the content, the art and the animation for the show were absolutely splendid. It might have been because most of the story takes place near water and the water animation and reflection were impressive, but the show really managed to please your eyes. Even when there was either space battles or underwater hand-to-hand combat between mecha and whalesquid, the show always managed to properly animate everything and to keep the level of detail quite high even when a lot of motion were at hand.

The art style for Suisei no Gargantia was quite standard, there was really nothing to put it in a different category from any other show, but it was really well done and it always shows when a lot of effort has been put into animating everything. There really isn’t much to say about the art as it was great and this show deserves a 9 out of 10 for art quality and for its great animation.

Characters

Suisei no Gargantia srsbsnss mode on

Here is where things slowly start to go wrong. The main character is a brainwash military soldier who knows nothing else but to fight, therefore while he has a lot of character development potential, he is quite empty at the beginning of the show and acts like a mindless soldier. He ends up in a community that has a standard of living completely different to anything he was ever accustomed to and his moral had no chance but to change.

It was kind of ridiculous that throughout the series the most humane character was an A.I. Every other characters seemed completely stupid or inhumane. Except for Ledo, the main character, no one ever seemed to have any character development. There was some romance going on, but it never flourished and it never seemed to affect the character nearly as much as falling in love with someone should. It just seems like everything in the show was taken too lightly, might it be human greed, human emotions or humanity’s thirst for knowledge.

Overall no character was so shallow or  wrong that things felt really weird, but they were not interesting either in any way. That is why that the show gets a 7 out of 10 for characters, not bad, but not great either.

Soundtrack & Opening/Ending

Suisei no Gargantia mass driver my ass

If there is one thing that the show did great, it was the opening theme. The song, the animation and the colours were all done magnificently. By looking at the opening anyone could presume that Suisei no Gargantia is a good mainstream show that anyone can pick up and enjoy…too bad it is false advertising, but this will be for later.

For now the Opening managed to make it into our Top 5 Opening of the season and it deserves its place as it is really good, but on the other hand the ending was boring both in term of song and animation. The entire time you simply see someone surfing on waves and while it is pretty, it gets boring really, really quickly. The ending song is so uninteresting that I can’t even remember it even though I’ve heard it countless time for 3 months straight.

To be honest the soundtrack for the show was alright at best, while the art was gorgeous I never felt like the music was as stimulating as the visuals, it was quite the let down really considering all the great artistic quality the show already had. In the end, Nothing was definitively bad with the music, the opening or the ending, but the weak soundtrack and ending weighted down the score for this and this is why that even with a great opening I have to give a show a 7 out of 10 for this section.

Storyline

Suisei no Gargantia underwater squirmish

Here is where everything goes wrong. The basic idea of Suisei Gargantia story is one we have seen just too many time already. It is yet another Pocahontas / Avatar and what have you. A guy from an advance civilization falls into a new territory where he has to live and adapt to the live style of the locals and how the locals have to adapt to his traditions and technologies. The guy fall in love with a local and therefore becomes attached to the local culture and from there starts fighting for them. Eventually his own clan and heritage ask him to destroy his new local friends and he refuses and fight against his old friend instead. He wins and go live with the local and becomes happy ever after.

Here you go, this is Suisei no Gargantia’s story, now you don’t have to watch the show anymore, you’re welcome. I would actually be quite happy if the show was nearly as good as Pocahontas or Avatar, but unfortunately it is not. The story is really misleading at first, the first episode gives good vibe of science-fiction and mecha battle, but if you are into that stuff, it is the only episode you will enjoy as everything else from here is closer to have slice of life than anything else. Most episode between the second and tenth feel filler-ish, they usually consist of beach episode or character introduction. They try to have funny situation and go for cheap laugh, but the story content was completely absent until we reached the 9th episode. If it takes 2/3 of your show to actually start the story, there is a good chance it won’t be very enjoyable. And it isn’t like the last third was any good either, overall this is one of the major reason why the show is so boring to me…because the story was complete shit.

The show tried to touch too many subject, too many issues and it ended up failing at making any of them really fit the story and this is why everything was so bad and nothing ever happened story-wise. Because of all those negative things, The story of the show is worth no more than a 6 out of 10. It was watchable at best.

Overall Entertainment Value

Suisei no Gargantia lukage

So we previously just mentioned that the show had a very poor story, unoriginal and filled with fillers. Well, not only were there a ton of filler-ish episode, but they were all pretty boring. The show was pretty, it was entertaining for my eyes, but boy was it boring for my brain. The subject that were approach and the morals of the show were all so unoriginal, overdone and boring in general. The show tried to teach the way of communism, community living and carefree life without goals. Meanwhile half the other episodes were about what defines humanity and our war against ourselves. In the end it seemed that just too many things were tried and talk about and I just didn’t cared about any of them after a while. The beach episodes were boob-less, the action episode were sacrifice-less and the final episode was a huge let down.

Every single hype the show created never seemed to be fulfilled. After the first two episode I had so many questions that I wanted answered, I had a thirst for more knowledge about the great universe of Gargantia…but turns out we only got half the answer only 7 episodes later after so many episode of nothing that I lost all interest in having those answered to begin with.

The show was so positive and without any worries that any action scene seemed pointless, no one would ever die and no sacrifice would ever be made, it just seemed like the whole thing was one huge waste of time. Because of this, I found every new week tedious and hoped for everything to be over and this is why this gets a 6 out of 10.

Conclusion

Suisei no Gargantia stand off

Suisei no Gargantia is a pretty show, but that is about everything that it has going for it. The show is a disappointment from the very beginning, a real false advertising and then it keeps you waiting forever for the action and story to begin. By the time it does, you won’t even care about it anymore because it is empty and done so poorly.

Suisei no Gargantia aimed for the mainstream, but I think it failed to make anything new, create any fun and memorable moment and in the end after watching it, I just don’t have anything good to say about the show and nothing to compliment it on. Even if I wanted I couldn’t recommend this show to anyone since it was too dispersed and unfocused to attract any specific kind of viewer. Suisei no Gargantia will forever stay hidden under the sea of anime and if it gets pull out of the water from time to time, it will only be for people to realize that it was only junk to begin with.

I give this show a 7 out of 10. It is not terrible, but it is not good either. Just no reason to watch it unless you are really bored and you have nothing better to do with your life.

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
Glad I’m not the only one who thought ”Garbantia” sucked major.

Yeah I was getting pretty annoyed that NOTHING bad was going to happen these people, it got really tedious and uninteresting.

The animation by Proudction I.G is absolutely gorgeous, but it’s a shame it all had to go to waste with something that was never going to be anything conventional at the end.
