This episode nearly single-handedly made me lose all hope in the show with its first half. I was already getting worried that the show might end up turning into completely different genre and start being way too romance and school-life-centric, and then they have a beach episode. You have no idea how much I didn’t wanted to see that beach sequence. If there is one thing that I felt this show didn’t needed, it was pointless fanservice. Having Karl and Claire love story develop is fine with me, but that whole swimsuit exhibition contest was completely unnecessary to have the story and character develop and it had no positive effect on the show what so ever. If it was not for the sudden change towards a more action-packed and trouble heavy future, I would have begun hating this show for betraying me in turning into such an innocent teenager love-fest. I’m glad that the show is starting to see some real trouble, makes me glad that I didn’t put my hopes in this show for nothing.
Now, let’s forget about the beach moment and go straight to the story elements of the episode. We learned more about Claire’s past and how she came to be a puppet used by the revolutionary movement to overthrow the old regime. We already knew her involvement as an idol and symbol of the revolution, but it wasn’t made clear until now how involved and conscious she was in that revolution. In the end she really was but a tool, just a little girl looking for a place to belong and she was used to feel like she had a purpose in life. This doesn’t erase the things she has done, but it makes it interesting and relevant because now she has lost her power to control the winds. A symbol of a republic, is now exiled in a quest never to come back, we might not yet know why the hell they were sent into exile in this mission to begin with, but I’m sure we’ll get to it one day.
Now the important part is…the enemies are here. They might be old relic of the past with subpar jets, but it remains something to be worried about. It won’t be all sunshine and happiness on Isla anymore, we’ll now have something more dangerous going on in the sky. It seems that they have finally arrived at the first checkpoint where we’ll see if those new pilot were any good or not. I think it wouldn’t be that surprising if some side character were to not make it back next episode, after all next episode marks the halfway mark for the show and this is usually when stuff start to go down in anime. I’m sure that there won’t be any more time for beach episodes in the future and that tears from broken heart and blood from broken bones will replace the swimsuits instead…and I’m sure looking forward to that.
