This show is so much funnier than I thought it would be. I was really surprised at how fun and enjoyable it was to watch this considering that the content is usually stuff that I seriously could care less about. I’m not into school life or petty romance and even less into high school girl dilemmas, but this show just cracked me up nonetheless. It really tells a lot when a show with a bad setting and atmosphere for you still manages to make you fall in love with it, she might be an ugly whore but she sure has a wonderful personality.
The show is about a little high school girl who wants to be popular in school, but she is socially awkward x 1000 and she just has some really bad hygiene and unhealthy behaviours. She walks around looking like something between a ghost and a psycho. The story is all about her quest to make a boyfriend and become super popular like she is in her dating sim.
This first episode was so funny that it made my day first thing in the morning. There was just something about that weird hikikomori humour that mixed in Otaku reference which made me crack up. The show’s art isn’t what you would see in an AAA romance or drama, it is rather sketchy and unpolished, but it makes the show feels so much funnier than it could any other way. The animation isn’t as realistic and instead the use of colours and effects are common to help transmit emotions and feelings from the character. When she was feeling depressed and psychotic the whole air around her would turn the colour her mind was set on. This choice of art style made the show less visually appealing, but much funnier than it could have been otherwise.
Another thing that really got me with Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui is, not only the super long title, but the incredibly fun and different opening it has. It is very rare that we see a show diverge from the traditional song type for an opening and this song which was a mix of death and power metal sure was interesting to listen to. The singers weren’t the best, but just to see a show use this kind of opening made me even more interested in watching it.
I probably won’t be blogging Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui simply because of the nature of the show. It is very difficult to discuss anything really meaningful with a gag show like that and while I do find the show hilarious, I seriously couldn’t care less about the incest/romance/school life story that goes on behind it. I will be watching this show most definitively, but I won’t cover it each week. I would recommend this show with anyone who watches anime, because there is a good chance that at some point in your life, you too considered yourself socially awkward and you will relate to this story well enough to laugh at the jokes. I’m pleased with the kind of content that the summer is bringing so far and I’m happy to see that the sun outside won’t be the only thing to warm my heart this summer.
