For the past 3 years I have been playing a game called Wurm Online. Back when I started it was still in beta and looked rather terrible, but it has considerably improved since then and now has some rather good looking graphics and a new remake of its interface is coming over in the near future too. What is Wurm Online exactly? Let me give you a quick idea of the kind of game that it is right now.
Wurm Online is a MMORPG, but unlike others, it is one where the world is created by player and fought by players. When a new server starts, it is but a huge empty land and it is only as player start to populate it that alliance forms, war are fought and resources are gathered. In the game there is a plethora of skill that can be leveled, from run of the mill like mining, fighting and cooking to obscure random skill like Yoyo and Toy Making. You get to run around and make friends (or enemies) and you can do what ever the hell you want, but be prepare to live the consequences because Wurm Online is an unforgiving game.
Starting Wurm Online is harsh because you are born nearly butt naked into the world, with no skill what so ever, but more importantly, with no idea how cruel Wurm Online can be if you are not prepared for it. Monsters roams the land and even people who you thought were allies can turn on you at any moment and leave with all your belongings. The game does have initial faction to which you belong to, but it is possible for any player with enough vision to create his own Kingdom, become a king among others, to rule huge part of the land…It is even rumored that one could become a God and transcend their avatar into an almighty game entity, although it is also said that accomplishing such a feat is too difficult for anyone to ever achieve. Wurm Online is a land of endless possibilities, you can play for years to become the best blacksmith of the land, or you can thrive to become one of the Knight of your kingdom and be given power greater than anyone else among your peers at the cost of the lives of your enemies. This is what Wurm Online is…at least to someone who can handle this kind of game.
For a more casual gamer, Wurm Online is a spreadsheet-fest. It is a game where making a fireplace can take 2 minutes just because you keep on failing it. It is a game where building a 1 meter squared house can take you a month of play time before you can level your skills high enough and gather all the necessary materials. Wurm Online is a game where making a walls means clicking through a cumbersome interface for hours, only to bring back rocks to the surface, and proceed to click through actions for some more hours until you get bricks and finally click some more to get a 1 meter wide wall. It might take you one hour to get from level 1 to 15 in a skill, but it will take you 12 hours to get from 70 to 71. It is a game that I don’t consider should be played as something incredibly active. I play Wurm Online while I work on other things on the side, I’m able to make the boring task go more quickly if all I have to do is to click a set of short cut over and over again without any need to even looking at my screen. Wurm Online is a great game, but only if you enjoy difficult games with clunky interface but huge amount of freedom.
Now that you have a better idea what Wurm Online is, here is something to show you what a lengthy project can look like in that game. As I previously mentioned, I am playing Wurm Online currently on the Epic cluster and more specifically on Desertion(Mol Rehan for anyone interested enough). Two friends and I have been playing for the past few years and leveled our skilled, built a great village and now we were wanting to create a new extension to our city where new people could join and live in and also a place where boat could dock to unload cargo that would be closer to our city. For those reasons we began working on a project to create such a thing. Here is a video of the time lapse of its construction and what it looks like afterward.
Here is what this video was about for anyone who haven’t played the game and are confused. The first half of the video shows a time-lapse of the creation of the town extension. That time-lapse is made only of pictures taken at regular 1 minutes interval, it took about 7 hours to build what was shown in the time-lapse with 2 people involved. After the building construction over, it took about 20 hours for one person to build and place every decorations and light that you see in the village when we are taken for a tour. Not shown or mentioned in the video is the 3 month worth of work in the mining, stone cutting, mortar making and woodcutting needed to manufacture all the necessary building tool for that time-lapse. In the end, the entire project took well over 150 man hour to produce.
At the end, with the work of 2 people we built 4 two stories houses, 1 storage for cargo, 1 mansion and a tower. Everything surrounded by nice iron fence gate. If you are interested to play Wurm Online, give it a try it is free to play (but you can’t level past 20 in any skill unless you do pay a subscription fee). If you happen to like the game and become a premium member you can contact me in game and ask about those beautiful house we just built and it could become yours.
