Zetsuen no Tempest [first impression] episode 1: suddenly butterflies

Suddenly Butterflies…Butterflies everywhere…

There is nothing wrong with this show at first sight. It is another story of young boys and one girl saving the world with their newly acquired magical powers. Yet, there is something important missing in this story: I feel like it is simply not focused enough. Usually, you can tell the level of intellectualism and how deep a show will be with its atmosphere and with the depth of the characters. Right now with Zetsuen no Tempest, the tone and poetic part of the episode make us expect something quite romantic and artistic. Yet, the world in which the show is set in simply seems a bit off. The magic order and the way magic is presented feels really cheap. The characters themselves seem to be more than meets the eyes, but yet are so simple and flat this episode.

No shit Sherlock

Those crazy hippies…killing off humanity to grow a tree

While I must say that I hugely love contrast, in the case of Zetsuen no Tempest, the contrast is simply not in the right places. I’m not sure if this show is trying to be a dumb supernatural show all about the action and epicness, or if the show is trying a more poetic approach to its story telling. I absolutely dislike the mix of the two genres. I can watch an epic artistic show or a poetic action show, but I feel like artsy and dumb are two things that, while possible to mix together, usually result in stomach-ache.

Don’t worry I’m not shady at all she said. Just a 28 years old unemployed woman, she said.

Of course, this is only the first episode of the show, maybe the focus will be set straight sooner rather than later. Maybe the little artsy feel I saw from the butterflies and the poems are but a random element of this dumb show, or maybe the characters and universe were made really flat in this episode because the depth of it will be revealed slowly overtime so as not to overwhelm us. In either case, while I might watch this show a little more before having my final judgement on it, I won’t be blogging it on a regular basis, if at all. The premise of the first episode is simply not interesting enough to compel me to watch more of this. While there was nothing wrong with this first episode, I can’t say there was anything good with it either.

Sticks and stones
May break my bones
But chains and whips
Excite me

Sauron awakens!
